Headlines 1/19

I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend.  We took some time this morning to learn a little more about Martin Luther King Jr. and listened to an excerpt from his final speech.  My hope is that our students will have an appreciation and an understanding of the road he paved for our country.

Math: We began our unit on measurement on Friday, learning about how to find the area of different shapes.  We will continue this week to focus on areas of irregular shapes.

Writing/Grammar:  We are in the midst of learning about how to use adverbs and pronouns in clauses.  We will be having a short quiz at the end of the week on diagramming complex sentences and will then begin learning helping and linking verbs.

Literature: We have read the first nine chapters of The Secret Garden and will continue to work through the book this week.  Tomorrow will be a short vocabulary and comprehension quiz over chapters 1-9.

Science:  This week we will begin an experiment based on our study of plants.  Pease be sure to remind your students that they should be reviewing their notes nightly in preparation for tests and quizzes!

History:  We will finish our unit on The Glorious Revolution this week.  The study guide will be coming home on Thursday and we will tentatively take the test next Tuesday.

 Announcements

  • After a lengthy discussion with our fifth grade team, we have decided that we will be using math groups as a review within our curriculum.  Because of this, they will no longer be every Wednesday.  This week we will have math groups on Thursday from 8:15-9:15.  If you are able to help, please email me and let me know.  Thank you so much for all of your support in this area.

  • Spalding Homework Change!  Hopefully your child has informed you about the change we have made.  From this point students should have each word dictated to them once, written with markings.  They should then check the words, and those they get wrong should be written, without markings, three times.  Our hope is that this will allow the students to focus on the words they are struggling with.
