The Headlines, 2/23

We stayed busy and accomplished a great deal in all of our subjects last week.  I am looking forward to another great week with our scholars.

Math:  Last week we focused on how to multiply and divide decimals by whole numbers as well as how to convert fractions to decimals.  We also made corrections on the quiz they were given the week before.  Because this was a quiz and not a test I did allow them to improve their grade.  This week we will be learning how to multiply and divide decimals by powers of 10.

Literature:  In Poetry we worked on analyzing poetry using “Oh Captain, My Captain,” as our model.  We also spent time discussing illusion and rhyme scheme.  This week we will be focusing on Similes and Metaphors and the study of Haikus and Limericks.  Poetry recitations will be Friday!  Hopefully your student has been practicing their poem at home.

Writing:  Last week we took notes over the elements of a four paragraph essay and the class created an outline for theirs.  Starting today we will begin writing these.  I am modeling every step of the writing process for them, so they have a very clear understanding of what they should do.  We will complete the rough draft this week and each student will peer edit and have a conference with me over their essay.  The final drafts should be typed over the weekend.  If you need the paper to be printed at school, simply email me the Word Document.

Science:   We held off on the Muscle test and will be taking that tomorrow.  This should have given your scholar more time to study and be prepared!  Because we will be taking a typing class (see below)  this week we will not begin our next Science unit until next week.

History:  Last week we learned all about Magellan and how the English began to colonize.  Next we will be studying about France and the Fur Trade, the Dutch explorers and how slavery impacted the early years of the United States.
